Project Description: About DWeb

Decentralized Web (DWeb) is an initiative to facilitate discussions, thinking, and action to build a more private, reliable, secure, and open web. Since 2016, DWeb has been building bridges to enable diverse communities to freely exchange ideas about the technologies, values, markets and agreements we need to move forward. DWeb has grown to include a dozen nodes across four continents. In addition to monthly DWeb meetups, we produce DWeb Camp. Our community has developed this set of DWeb Principles to help guide the technological development of a decentralized web.

We are seeking a DWeb Social Media and Community Manager to collect and steward resources about the DWeb, plan and organize events and dialogues, and help deepen ties and expand the DWeb community.

Job Overview

We are seeking a dynamic and self-motivated Decentralized Web Social Media and Community Manager to oversee and manage communication strategies, community engagement, and event planning in the decentralized web space. This role helps drive effective communication across multiple platforms and communities as well as supports the smooth execution of decentralized web projects and events.

Position Duties

Communications and Publicity (30%)

  • Develop and execute communication strategies ensuring clear, transparent, and engaging messaging across various channels.
  • Collaborate with the team to understand the decentralized web ecosystem and translate complex concepts into accessible, compelling content for diverse audiences.
  • Maintain and update the GetDWeb online presence across decentralized platforms, ensuring consistency in messaging including:
    • Manage social media accounts, maintain and update GetDWeb presence across decentralized platforms including Bluesky, Matrix, Discord, etc.
    • Manage content for the DWeb website (GetDWeb.net).
    • Publish regular community newsletter updates using Mailchimp.
  • Research and promote resources and news to relevant DWeb projects.

Community Engagement (30%)

  • Support the development of a strong community culture and ecosystem around the decentralized projects and technologies.
  • Engage with decentralized communities, forums, and content creation to build awareness and drive engagement.
  • Collaborate with the team on organizational strategy to expand and deepen collaboration within the DWeb community.
  • Build, and foster relationships with community members, thought leaders, partners, and stakeholders across the decentralized web community and platforms.
  • Assist with and support direct outreach to DWeb Nodes and community members.
  • Support the promotion and application of the Decentralized Web Principles.
  • Monitor community feedback and work with the team to address concerns, gather insights, and improve engagement efforts.

Event Planning & Facilitation (20%)

  • Work with the DWeb Core Organizers to support and facilitate virtual and in-person events.
  • Support community outreach programs, meetups and events that promote decentralized technologies and projects.
  • Draft and manage event copy and media, including recap blog posts about events.

Organizational Strategy and Admin (20%)

  • Participate in weekly strategy meetings.
  • Coordinate with team archivist, engineers and designers to complete joint projects.
  • Make purchases, submit expenses, and other administrative tasks related to the role.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Exceptional Written and Verbal Communication: Capable of communicating effectively with a wide range of people, through many communication channels (social media, community forums, small group, public speaking, mass emails, facilitating conference calls, etc.), with a talent for simplifying complex technical topics.
  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of decentralized web technologies (e.g., blockchain, Web3, decentralized storage, DApps, etc.) and the broader ecosystem.
  • Social Media Skills: Experience with content creation across multiple social media channels, particularly platforms such as Bluesky, Matrix, Discord, etc.
  • Technology Skills: Proficient with Google Docs and Suite, GitHub/GitLab, social media apps, mass mail programs like Mailchimp, basic website editing (WordPress), and Slack
  • Facilitation and Event Planning: Experience organizing event logistics.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Experience with community engagement and highly effective at engaging diverse stakeholders, listening to many perspectives and able to provide necessary coordination and feedback.

Application Details

This is a part-time contract position for short-term leave coverage till July 2025. This position is expected to be an average of 10 hours/week with Gatherings for Good, a separate, subsidiary non-profit of the Internet Archive.

The Social Media and Community Manager will report to the DWeb Senior Organizers.

Our Timeline: We are accepting applications through 12:00 PM PST February 7, 2025. We expect to begin conducting interviews at the end of January/start of February and make a decision before the end of February to give time for onboarding.

Location: This is a remote position, however the organizer must be available for meetings between 9 AM - 5 PM Pacific Time.

Compensation & Benefits: This is a contract position that will be compensated $30/hour.
